Irish libraries : featured library resource for August 2014

The library has received a gift of an important volume for Irish genealogical research, from member Jane Burke LeGendre.  Compiled by Robert K. O'Neill, Director of the Burns Library at Boston College, Irish libraries : archives, museums & genealogical centres was published in 2002 by the Ulster Historical Foundation in Belfast.

The main body of the book lists institutions by town within county, giving contact information, access information, and a description of holdings.  This geographical arrangement makes the book especially useful for someone planning a research trip, and indeed its purpose is stated as "an effort to include those institutions that are likely to be most attractive to and welcoming of visitors, with a focus on local and family history." (p. xi)

Additional chapters and appendices cover: the Irish Genealogical Project, a brief essay on Tracing your County Kildare Ancestors, and a substantial listing of Tithe and Valuation Records c.1823, by county.  (The latter were tax records that serve as a de facto farm census.)  There is also a glossary which covers historical events, political and organizational terms, religious denominations, etc.  A select bibliography and an index complete the volume.

We welcome your visit to the CCGS Library, housed in the Dennis Public Library, and open Tuesdays (12-4), Thursdays (10-4) and Saturdays (10-noon).
