Third Supplement to Torrey’s New England Marriages Prior to 1700 donated to CCGS Library

CCGS Librarian Betsy Ferris has announced that the Cape Cod Genealogical Society Library has recently received the Third Supplement to Torrey’s New England Marriages Prior to 1700, by Melinde Lutz Sanborn, as a gift from member Carol Mageneau. Carol won the volume as a door prize at the Society’s annual banquet this past spring and decided to donate it to the library, which had only the Second Supplement.

Torrey’s manuscript, New England Marriages before 1700, was written as a comprehensive index to marriages noted in the collection of books and periodicals at the New England Historic and Genealogical Society. After Clarence Torrey’s death in 1962, NEHGS librarian David Dearborn updated the list from time to time, and it was frequently used in the Reading Room. The index was digitized in 1985.

This present work is an update compiled from major genealogical periodicals published from 1962 through the spring of 2003. It incorporates all of the information from the first and second supplements and adds 80% new material. Listings are alphabetical by groom’s surname, followed by the name of the bride, marriage date and place, and abbreviated reference.
