Genealogy Room at the Dennis Public Library

The Cape Cod Genealogical Society's Genealogy Room is located in the Dennis Public Library, 5 Hall Street, Dennis Port, MA.

CCGS Volunteers are available to assist patrons in all aspects of genealogy research. A handout packet of useful genealogical forms and information is available for beginning researchers.

Accessing online databases














Subscription genealogy databases are available for your free use in the Genealogy Room:
  • Ancestry.com:  Dedicated to family history includes billions of records – census, vital, military, immigration – for the U.S. and U.K., and One World Tree collections of millions of names and family trees submitted by members. Library Edition.
  • Ani-Map:  Displays over 2,000 different maps showing all the changing county boundaries in the 48 adjacent states for every year from colonial times to the present.  Includes searchable databases with over 799,000 locations including cities, towns, churches, schools, cemeteries, courthouses, and more than 50,000 historical sites.
  • CCGS Bulletin:  Searchable by word from first issue from October, 1975 thru December 2008. The Bulletin is the official print publication of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society.
  • Family Search.org:  Service of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints providing family history and genealogy records and resources from around the world.  Includes catalog of the world’s largest genealogy library located in Salt Lake City, Utah, with millions of rolls of microfilmed records and more than 350,000 books.
  • HeritageQuest:  Provided online thru the library’s subscription to Proquest.  Its American genealogical and historical sources date back to the 1700s and include U.S. census records with original images, local history books, and PERSI, the index to genealogical periodicals.
  • NewEnglandAncestors.org:  Collection of databases provided thru subscription to the New England Historic Genealogical Society (HISTGEN).  The Society, founded in 1845 and located in Boston, collects and preserves materials relating to the history of families in America.
  • Immigration Explorer:  A New York Times program tracking movement of ethnic groups in the U.S. from 1880 to 2000 by colored maps.
  • World Vital Records.com:  A growing collection of databases provided thru subscription, containing more than 1.2 billion records from the U.S., U.K., Ireland, and Canada.
The Genealogy Room supports two on-line computers with attached printers.

Collections

Browse our Collection Online 

CCGS library materials have been acquired by direct purchase and by donation. This is a reference collection; items do not circulate, but must be used in the library.

The collection is strong in guide books about how to do genCCGS Library Collectionealogy, with files of tips and helpful hints. Subject concentration is on Cape Cod people, but coverage is worldwide. Current genealogical magazines and newsletters of general and regional interest bring the latest information to our shelves regularly. The growing collection of information on CD is helping us manage limited library space, yet provide volumes of data.

Books

The Society's book collection includes volumes covering the following
categories of genealogical interest. All are available for reading in the Genealogy Room.
  • Biography - Family histories and genealogies, Cape Cod and beyond
  • Cemeteries - Books listing names of persons interred, describing gravestones and epitaphs in cemeteries in Plymouth and Barnstable Counties
  • History - Volumes related to early New England and Cape Cod history, including soldiers and sailors of various wars, early settlers and immigrants
  • Massachusetts Towns - Histories of towns on Cape Cod and other areas of Massachusetts, including some vital records
  • Mayflower Families - Mayflower Families Through Five Generations and related titles published by the Society of Mayflower Descendants
  • Sources - Census records, tax lists and other sources citing names of persons
  • "How-To" Genealogy Research Guides - Aids to researching specific areas of genealogy
Archives

In addition to the listed collections, the library has unpublished information and personal papers which may be of interest to researchers. Although some of these items have not yet been cataloged, more finding aids are being added regularly to our collection. Archives Listing.

Magazines

CCGS has subscriptions to about 25 genealogical periodicals.
